How to start a career in social media

I get a lot of questions from you about how I started working in the field of social media. I am not surprised that more and more people are interested in this topic. In the era of ubiquitous SM (Social Media), people began to see in social media not only a tool for contacting friends, but also earning opportunities. Below you will find out how to start a career in social media, whether it is worth working for an SM agency or maybe on your own. From the article you will also learn who Social Media Ninja is.

Social Media work

How to start a career in social media? As in most cases, the path of professional development in MS is best started with an internship. This does not mean, however, that this is the only (and best) option. It looked a bit different for me. My first professional experience with social media (professional, because I have been dealing with MS hobby since 2010 year, when I started to fanpage our blog. It was exactly a year after the D&P blog started. At that time SM was not so popular and being a blogger you didn't have to have his fanpage, profile on IG, Pinterest, Snapchat ...) was in 2014 year. An editorial and community team was built in Piotrek. There were 4 people in my team, of which I was mainly responsible for the social media of the large auction site. I was thrown into deep water, but it was a nice experience. I had a dozen translators under me, I created general and thematic posts related to, for example, holidays in a given country (the auction site was in various countries, e.g. Japan, Spain or Portugal). It was a nice task, because apart from being able to do what I loved, I learned a lot about other cultures. In addition, I trained English because many translators could only communicate in that language.

Later, I decided to cooperate with one of the largest Social Media agencies in Poland - Social Media Now. To this day I have contact with Piotr Chmielewski, I even helped them as a volunteer in organizing the first Social Media Week conference in Poland (the conference took place in Warsaw). It was fun working with your Facebook guru! In the so-called In the meantime, I started my own business and served clients from various industries in the field of running a fanpage or Instagram profile. Today, I can safely say that I feel best in the fashion and beauty industry, especially when it comes to online stores. Unfortunately, after some time a problem appeared after returning to work on their own - larger clients expected agency experience. Pay attention to this if you want to cooperate with larger brands.

Social Media Ninja or Social Media Manager

Job naming in the Social Media industry can be complicated. While there is no problem deciphering Social Media Manager, you may wonder who Social Media Ninja is and what features and experience should such a person have. I always refer to myself as Social Media & Influence Marketing Specialist. I have never called myself an expert in this field, although I have attitudes towards it, given my experience. For me, the word expert, however, is of great importance, especially in times when pseudoexperts are bundled with everything.

How to start a career in social media

You often ask whether it is better to start a career in SM on your own or maybe in an agency? I think that a good first step is an internship in an agency that will allow you to decide if this is something that you definitely want to do in your life. It is also worth considering whether you prefer to invent posts, moderate Facebook pages, and maybe create and optimize advertising campaigns on social media. Or both? Later, you can also decide if you want to work in an agency or you can, however, look for clients on your own (this option is more difficult, but it allows you to be independent and choose clients according to your interests or expectations).

Working in SM is not easy. First of all, there is a lot of competition (also people who spoil the market because they run a fan page for PLN 100), and you have to be aware that if you work on your own - you must be available. Crises in MS usually break out after 17: 00 and this is unfortunately true. I don't have a problem with it because, because of the blog, I'm even connected to my smartphone, thanks to which I react quickly to turbulent situations.

And now the most important thing about social media. If you are serious about it - do something about it. Come to trainings, take part in webinars, stay up to date with news (there are a lot of these!). This is the foundation in a career related to social media. If you don't know how the Instagram algorithm works or how many% of fans you can reach organically on Fanpage, this is not a job for you. In this profession, a large initiative counts, as well as the desire to be up to date. Without this knowledge, doing a good job is impossible. Be sure to check out Blogger's guide, where I often deal with issues related to social media (including Instagram algorithms or profile consistency on IG). This seems to be a difficult profession, but I will consider whether to go to university in this direction. I still have a year to choose the direction, but I have my own profile from 8 thousand followers which is still developing and I think I like to do it and I could do it for companies. Is it hard to look for customers ???

It is certainly demanding - first of all you need to train yourself all the time and have a lot of free time that you will use to support your profiles. This is not a job from 9-17 as it seems to agencies. It's work from early morning to late evening 🙂

I started with an internship, then I was a Junior Social Media Specialist, then Social Media Specialist, and now I am a Social Media Manager and I have under me a team of 3 people with lower positions. I love sharing experiences and knowledge so maybe we can talk on priv?

It's nice that you write about it and share your experience. People do not rather do this, just keep more valuable information for themselves in fear of competition probably! I also work in the SM industry and I would only add that you need to gather experience to be able to show off some achievements but I also started with an internship at the agency and now I am an SM specialist.

I don't know, maybe they are afraid of competition although it is funny to me. If someone is good, they will have customers. For me, in professional and private life, quality counts. And if a potential customer wants cheap regardless of the quality, let him go to someone else who will perform the service for him even for 3 / 4 prices, I'm not interested. I work only with people who respect my experience, knowledge and time 🙂
